Before 1967, this was the checkpoint between Jordanian-controlled East Jerusalem (where most Christian sites were located) and Israeli West Jerusalem. Tour groups would visit East Jerusalem first then pass through this gate to enter West Jerusalem. The gate has long been gone but the building still exists today.
